Routine care is generally available from general practitioners or family practice professionals. Care from specialists is by referral only, which means you first visit the general practitioner before seeing the specialist. Most specialists have private offices (called “surgeries” or “clinic”), as well as consulting and treatment rooms located in Medical Centers attached to the main teaching hospitals. Residential areas are served by a large number of general practitioners who can take care of most general illnesses

The U.S Government assumes no responsibility for payment of medical expenses for private individuals. The Social Security Medicare Program does not provide coverage for hospital or medical outside the U.S.A. Port Moresby has many excellent physicians and surgeons, including specialists of all kinds. All residential areas are served by general practitioners. Competent optometrists, opticians, dentist, orthodontists, physiotherapists, gynecologist, anesthesiologists, cardiologist, obstetrician are available, and every one of them communicate in English, Pidgin and, in their local languages.

There are modern, well-equipped hospitals in Port Moresby especially the private hospital and few medical centers.

Medical Centers are located in most areas catering to all medical needs.

There are no serious endemic diseases and no special health problems.

The general level of community sanitation in all urban areas is average. However, in villages the general level of community sanitation is more control and is better.

The water supply is chlorinated and fluoridated but it is advisable to boil before consumption.

Pre-natal and post-natal advice is available from infant welfare sisters based at hospitals or community nurses at health centers.

All hospitals or health centers (clinics) in the country provide baby health care that is for free and available to everyone.

Immunizations
Keeping up with immunizations is important to the health and well-being of children, but sometimes forgotten. The immunizations special programs conduct every month at any Hospitals or Health Centers through the country and parents are remind to consult with any Hospitals or Health Centers in their location. Even in Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, there were outbreaks measles in the past years led to few deaths especially Children. There are also polio outbreaks in the Indonesia and the Health Department is very aware of that. They are doing everything possible in making sure the polio does not spread into Papua New Guinea.
